How these prices are compiled

Each state page shows the most recent residential price in the EIA public bulk files this build read. EIA may have published a newer week or month since then; its own pages, linked below, carry its latest release. The figures come from two public bulk files. The page build does not estimate a missing price.

Electricity

Residential electricity is a monthly price in cents per kilowatthour. It is EIA's average retail price for the residential sector: residential electricity revenue divided by residential kilowatthour sales in that state. It is an average across all residential customers, not the rate on any one bill. EIA's revenue figure includes energy, demand and customer charges, fuel adjustments, other surcharges, and taxes paid by the utility. Monthly figures are preliminary and EIA revises them. The series id is ELEC.PRICE.<ST>-RES.M in ELEC.zip. EIA publishes that series for every state and for the District of Columbia. In the file last modified on Oct 23, 2026, the latest month is August 2026.

Heating oil and propane

Heating oil and propane are residential prices in dollars per gallon from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program. EIA collects them weekly only during the heating season, October through March: heating oil in 21 states and the District of Columbia, propane in 38 states. Each figure is the price as of 7:00 a.m. local time on the Monday shown, not an average over the week. The prices exclude taxes and discounts. EIA can revise a week's figure the following week, so a figure here can differ slightly from EIA's current table. From April through September EIA publishes no weekly price, so the page keeps the last heating-season figure and its date. The prices come from PET.zip. The heating-oil series id is W_EPD2F_PRS_S<ST>_DPG. The propane series id is W_EPLLPA_PRS_S<ST>_DPG. In the file used for these pages, the latest price is for Monday, Oct 19, 2026.

EIA does not publish a current price for every state. The state page says "not reported by EIA" when the bulk file has no series for that state, when the series has no numeric price, or when that price trails the newest state for the same fuel by 120 days or more. Illinois heating oil ends in March 1991. The District of Columbia heating-oil series has no numeric price after Oct 7, 2019. Those are not current prices, so the page does not show them.

What these pages leave out

The pages do not convert prices to dollars per million Btu. They do not estimate a bill, and they do not claim a savings. The EIA logo is not used.
